  • FEELING BURNT OUT AT WORK? HERE ARE 5 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE TAKING THE NEXT STEP

World Mental Health Day serves as an important reminder to reflect on how our working lives affect our mental and emotional wellbeing. From demanding workloads and constant connectivity to limited workplace support, professional responsibilities can take a toll on employees, even when they enjoy what they do.

According to Jobstreet by SEEK’s Workplace Happiness Index 2026, 70% of Malaysian workers say they are happy at work. However, 41% report feeling burnt out or exhausted, while only 36% are satisfied with their stress levels. These findings highlight a growing workplace reality: job satisfaction does not necessarily mean employees are free from stress or exhaustion.

Before making a major career decision, it is important to understand the factors contributing to burnout and consider whether meaningful changes can improve the situation. Here are five questions to ask yourself before deciding what comes next.

    1. Am I Unhappy with My Job, or Am I Struggling to Switch Off?

Enjoying your job does not mean you will never feel exhausted. The Workplace Happiness Index 2026 found that 41% of Malaysian workers experience burnout or exhaustion, with employees who are unhappy at work twice as likely to report these feelings.

Recognising the difference between job dissatisfaction and difficulty switching off can help identify the underlying issue. Consider whether you feel constantly tired, dread the beginning of each working week or struggle to relax after office hours. Reflect on whether these feelings improve after taking a proper break or persist even when you have time to rest.

Understanding these patterns can help determine whether the problem stems from the role itself, excessive responsibilities or an inability to maintain healthy boundaries between work and personal life. Without addressing the root cause, changing jobs may not necessarily prevent similar challenges from recurring.

    2. What Is Causing Most of My Stress?

Workplace stress can arise from several factors, including unrealistic deadlines, unclear expectations, excessive workloads and a lack of flexibility. Jobstreet by SEEK’s findings show that only 42% of Malaysian workers are satisfied with their workload, while 41% identify better work-life balance as one of the factors that would improve their workplace happiness.

Identifying the main source of stress is an important step towards finding a solution. Employees should consider whether their responsibilities are manageable, whether priorities are clearly communicated and whether they are expected to remain available beyond normal working hours.

Once these challenges are identified, discussing them with a manager may help establish more realistic deadlines, clearer priorities or a more flexible working arrangement. While such conversations may not resolve every issue, they can provide a clearer picture of whether the current working environment is capable of supporting employees’ wellbeing.

    3. Beyond My Salary, Does My Work Give Me a Reason to Stay Engaged?

Financial security remains an important consideration when evaluating job satisfaction. The Workplace Happiness Index 2026 found that 57% of Malaysian workers ranked a higher salary among the top five factors that could make them happier at work.

However, compensation is not the only factor influencing how employees feel about their careers. The research identified purpose as having the strongest relationship with workplace happiness, with day-to-day responsibilities also playing a significant role.

Employees can reflect on whether their work feels meaningful, allows them to use their strengths and provides opportunities to develop professionally. Having a clear understanding of how their contributions make a difference can help strengthen motivation and engagement.

Although a competitive salary is essential, a fulfilling working experience also depends on whether employees feel connected to their responsibilities and can see a future for themselves within their chosen career.

    4. Can I Be Myself and Still Grow in My Workplace?

A supportive working environment should allow employees to contribute ideas, seek guidance and develop their skills without feeling that they must compromise their identity to fit in. Workplace culture, opportunities for growth and a healthy work-life balance can all influence how employees experience their jobs.

For Gen Z workers, the Workplace Happiness Index 2026 identified purpose at work (65%), day-to-day responsibilities (61%), company culture (61%) and work-life balance (58%) as key drivers of workplace happiness. However, only 69% of Gen Z respondents said they could be themselves at work, compared with 75% of Millennials and Gen X.

The study also found that Gen Z workers reported the highest burnout rate at 45%, followed by Millennials at 41% and Gen X at 36%.

These findings highlight the importance of creating workplace environments that recognise employees’ differing needs and experiences. Workers, particularly those in the early stages of their careers, should consider whether they feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas and seeking support when challenges arise.

Feeling accepted, having meaningful responsibilities and receiving opportunities to learn can contribute to a stronger sense of belonging and a more sustainable working experience.

    5. What Can I Change Before Deciding to Leave?

Resigning may seem like the most straightforward response to workplace burnout, but exploring possible changes before making a final decision can provide valuable perspective. According to the Workplace Happiness Index 2026, 87% of Malaysian workers believe workplace happiness is a shared responsibility between employees and employers.

Employees can start by identifying practical adjustments that could improve their daily working experience. These may include discussing workload distribution, requesting greater flexibility, exploring career development opportunities or seeking additional support during particularly demanding periods.

Employers also have an important role in creating environments where employees feel comfortable raising concerns and where reasonable changes can be considered. Open communication, supportive management and clear expectations can help address workplace challenges before they become more difficult to manage.

However, not every situation can be resolved through conversation. If concerns remain unaddressed and the working environment continues to affect wellbeing, exploring other career opportunities may be a reasonable next step.

The research found that happy workers are three times more likely to feel motivated to go above and beyond their responsibilities and 37% less likely to look for another job. These findings underline the importance of creating workplace conditions that encourage employees to remain engaged and supported.

Making Wellbeing Part of Your Career Decisions

This World Mental Health Day, employees are encouraged to pay closer attention to how their work affects their wellbeing. Feeling burnt out does not automatically mean that a career change is necessary, but persistent exhaustion should not be ignored.

Taking time to identify the causes of stress, reassess personal priorities and explore possible solutions can help individuals make more informed decisions about their professional future. At the same time, employers must recognise that workplace happiness requires more than competitive salaries, extending to manageable workloads, supportive leadership and opportunities for meaningful growth.

Ultimately, enjoying a job and feeling exhausted can happen at the same time. Understanding that distinction is an important first step towards building a healthier relationship with work and deciding what needs to change.

  • WHY MENTAL WELLBEING IS VITAL AS MALAYSIA’S POPULATION AGES

As Malaysia’s population continues to age, mental wellbeing must become an essential part of conversations about healthy ageing. World Mental Health Day, observed on 10 October, carries the theme “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change”, highlighting the importance of listening to people with lived experience of mental health conditions to develop more inclusive and responsive support systems. This message is particularly relevant to older adults, whose emotional and psychological needs can sometimes be overlooked amid discussions about physical health and cognitive decline.

Improvements in healthcare and living conditions have contributed to longer life expectancy in Malaysia, with individuals aged 60 and above expected to account for approximately 12.3% of the population in 2026. However, living longer does not necessarily mean ageing well. Healthy ageing also involves feeling connected to others, being valued by society and maintaining a sense of purpose throughout different stages of life.

Healthy Ageing Goes Beyond Physical and Cognitive Health

Conversations about ageing often centre on chronic illnesses, mobility, physical limitations and cognitive decline. While these remain important considerations, mental wellbeing deserves equal attention. Older adults may experience significant changes as they move through later life, including retirement, the departure of children from the family home, changing family relationships and the loss of a spouse or close friends. Some may also face reduced independence or adjustments to familiar responsibilities and routines.

These transitions can influence emotional wellbeing, self-confidence, identity and a person’s sense of purpose. Although such changes are common, older adults should not be expected to navigate them without support. Recognising their emotional needs is an important step towards ensuring that ageing remains a meaningful and fulfilling experience.

Recognising Mental Health Concerns Beyond Ageing

Emotional and behavioural changes among older adults are sometimes dismissed as an inevitable consequence of growing older. Persistent sadness, social withdrawal, reduced interest in activities, changes in sleep or appetite, and forgetfulness may be attributed to age, potentially allowing signs of emotional distress to go unnoticed.

Growing older does not automatically lead to depression, anxiety or emotional difficulties. These are mental health concerns that deserve appropriate attention and support. Malaysian research has documented depression, anxiety and stress among older adults, with some concerns remaining undetected. Families, caregivers and healthcare professionals should therefore pay attention to noticeable changes in an older person’s mood or behaviour rather than assuming they are simply part of ageing.

Understanding Loneliness and the Importance of Connection

Loneliness is not determined solely by whether someone lives alone. An older adult may live independently while maintaining meaningful relationships, while another person surrounded by family and friends may still experience feelings of isolation. The quality of social connections often matters more than the number of people nearby.

A Malaysian study involving 2,188 older adults found that stronger social networks were associated with greater psychological flourishing and, among some groups, lower levels of loneliness. These findings reinforce the importance of meaningful relationships in supporting mental wellbeing as people age.

Regular interaction, opportunities to participate in community activities and the ability to maintain close relationships can help older adults feel included and connected. Creating these opportunities requires a collective effort from families, communities and society to ensure that older people remain active participants in everyday life.

Supporting Older Adults Through Loss and Life Transitions

Ageing can also involve experiences of loss that extend beyond bereavement. Losing a spouse, close friends or familiar responsibilities may affect an older person’s identity and sense of belonging. Changes in long-established roles as a parent, partner or caregiver, together with reduced independence, can also create emotional challenges.

While sadness is a natural response to loss, older adults need safe and supportive spaces to express their feelings and share their experiences. Families and communities should avoid placing pressure on them to move on quickly or dismissing their emotions as an unavoidable part of growing older. Listening with empathy and acknowledging their experiences can help create an environment where emotional needs are recognised and supported.

Building Communities That Support Mental Wellbeing

Supporting psychological wellbeing should be an integral part of Malaysia’s approach to healthy ageing. Encouraging older adults to remain socially connected, physically active and engaged in meaningful activities does not always require elaborate programmes or significant resources.

Simple initiatives such as small-group outings, community gatherings, dancing, singing and creative activities can encourage participation and interaction. These experiences offer more than opportunities to stay occupied; they also provide outlets for self-expression, sharing memories, stimulating the mind and building relationships.

Research into creative and social activities further highlights their potential value in supporting cognitive and emotional wellbeing. Instead of focusing exclusively on the difficulties associated with ageing, society should also recognise the activities, relationships and environments that help older adults maintain resilience, confidence and a sense of belonging.

Listening to Older Adults and Their Lived Experiences

The theme of World Mental Health Day serves as a reminder that meaningful support begins with listening. For older adults, this means understanding their individual needs, personal experiences and what gives their lives meaning. Families, communities and healthcare professionals should involve them in decisions that affect their daily lives rather than making assumptions about what is best for them.

A holistic approach to healthy ageing must consider physical and cognitive health alongside emotional wellbeing, social relationships and living environments. By listening to older adults and respecting their voices, society can develop more responsive forms of support that recognise their dignity, independence and individual aspirations.

Ultimately, healthy ageing is not simply about adding more years to life, but ensuring those years are lived with connection, dignity, meaning and purpose. As Malaysia moves towards an ageing society, supporting older adults must be a shared responsibility involving families, communities, healthcare professionals and policymakers. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, collective care and understanding are essential to helping people age healthily and meaningfully.

  • HONOR X9e Pro Faces Four Military-Inspired Challenges in Extreme Durability Test

KUALA LUMPUR, 7 October 2026 — HONOR Malaysia has put the HONOR X9e Pro through four military-inspired challenges in its latest commercial series, demonstrating the smartphone’s durability and water resistance under extreme conditions. Inspired by the discipline, endurance and resilience associated with military training, the challenges feature jungle survival and fieldcraft, precision shooting, a military-style obstacle course and an underwater endurance mission, pushing the device through hard impacts, accidental drops, muddy terrain and prolonged water exposure.

Throughout the four missions, the HONOR X9e Pro remains fully functional, highlighting its Extreme Armor-Tough Durability and Ultra-Tough Water Resistance. While the challenges go far beyond typical smartphone usage, they demonstrate the protective technologies designed to help users navigate everyday accidents, from unexpected drops and knocks to accidental spills and exposure to water. The campaign also reflects values familiar to Malaysians, including perseverance, resilience and the determination to overcome challenges.

Jungle Survival and Fieldcraft: Built for the Unexpected

The first mission takes the HONOR X9e Pro into a jungle survival scenario where adaptability and resourcefulness are essential. During the challenge, the smartphone is dropped onto a rock, falls into water and is even used to crack open a coconut, exposing it to repeated impacts and water in demanding conditions.

The device’s resilience is supported by Ultra-Bounce Anti-Drop Technology 4.0, which enables it to withstand drops from heights of up to three metres while reducing screen damage by up to 82%. Its durability is further supported by SGS 5-Star Certification for Drop Resistance in Harsh Conditions. Although using a smartphone to crack open a coconut is far from ordinary use, the mission highlights the importance of protection against accidental drops and unexpected impacts in daily life.

Precision Shooting: Enhanced Protection Against Impact

The second mission places the HONOR X9e Pro in a precision shooting scenario designed to showcase its reinforced display structure under high-impact conditions. At the centre of its screen protection is full high-energy shear-resistant adhesive coverage, which delivers approximately 10 times greater bonding strength to help keep the screen structure securely bonded during impact.

This enhanced bonding structure contributes to an additional 0.5 metres of overall drop resistance, complementing the device’s reinforced architecture and Ultra-Bounce Anti-Drop Technology 4.0. Together, these features are designed to provide greater protection against screen damage when a phone slips from the hand, falls off a table or strikes a hard surface.

Military-Style Obstacle Course: Durability Under Pressure

The third mission tests endurance through a military-style obstacle course involving climbing, crawling and navigating challenging terrain. As participants make their way through the course, the HONOR X9e Pro experiences another unexpected drop onto a hard surface before becoming covered in mud. Despite these demanding conditions, the smartphone remains operational.

The challenge highlights HONOR’s approach to durability, focusing not only on preventing accidents but also on engineering a device capable of withstanding unexpected impacts. This protection is particularly relevant for users who are constantly on the move, whether commuting, travelling, exercising or exploring the outdoors. In such situations, a sudden drop or knock should not necessarily interrupt everyday activities.

Underwater Endurance: Taking Water Resistance Further

The final mission shifts the focus to the HONOR X9e Pro’s Ultra-Tough Water Resistance through a five-minute underwater endurance challenge. Participants must free their restrained hands, carry a six-kilogram dumbbell through the water and retrieve the submerged smartphone before time runs out. The device also serves as the countdown timer throughout the mission, remaining underwater until it is retrieved.

The HONOR X9e Pro features IP68, IP69 and IP69K water-resistance ratings, alongside a submarine-inspired multi-compartment architecture. According to HONOR, the device is engineered to withstand water exposure at depths of up to 10 metres. Following the underwater challenge, the smartphone is retrieved fully functional.

Although most users will never subject their devices to such extreme conditions, unexpected encounters with water are common. Heavy rain, accidental spills and dropping a phone into water can disrupt daily activities, making water resistance an important consideration when choosing a smartphone.

Extreme Testing Designed Around Everyday Needs

Across all four missions, the HONOR X9e Pro faces increasingly demanding conditions involving hard impacts, muddy environments and prolonged water exposure. While the commercial series draws inspiration from military-style endurance tests, its underlying message centres on everyday smartphone protection.

Accidental drops, unexpected knocks and sudden exposure to rain are familiar concerns for smartphone users. By demonstrating the device under conditions that exceed ordinary use, HONOR aims to showcase how its durability technologies are designed to provide greater confidence when unexpected situations arise.

Beyond physical toughness, the campaign also emphasises discipline, perseverance and the determination to keep moving forward. These values are reflected in HONOR’s positioning of the X9e Pro as Pilihan Utama Rakyat Malaysia, bringing a focus on durability and water resistance to a smartphone designed for the realities of everyday life in Malaysia.

HONOR X9e Pro Now Available in Malaysia

The HONOR X9e Pro is available nationwide from 9 October 2026, with first-sale promotions offering a free HONOR Watch 6i, 730 days of front and back screen crack replacement, 730 days of liquid protection and a one-year extended warranty, with a combined stated value of RM1,326. Customers who make full payment can also enjoy a RM100 rebate.

Available in four colour options—Royal Purple, Reddish Brown, Dawn Gold and Midnight Black—the smartphone comes in two storage configurations. The 256GB model, featuring 8GB of physical RAM and an additional 16GB of HONOR Turbo RAM, is priced at RM1,899, while the 512GB variant retails at RM2,399.

With its combination of durability technologies, water resistance and launch promotions, the HONOR X9e Pro brings its military-inspired toughness campaign into the consumer market, offering Malaysian users a smartphone designed to handle the unexpected while supporting their everyday needs.

  • Moving Past Awareness: How Adults Can Truly Support Children with Dyslexia

Written by Alia Anif, Head of Marketing & Communications, Region Asia Pacific, ROSEN Group

When a child struggles with reading, writing or processing information, the way adults respond can shape how that child views their own abilities and future. While awareness of dyslexia has grown, greater understanding is needed to ensure children receive the support they need without being defined by their learning difficulties.

In Malaysia, an estimated 4% to 8% of school-going children have dyslexia. However, research involving Malaysian primary school teacher trainees has identified gaps in knowledge about the condition’s symptoms, diagnosis and treatment, highlighting the importance of strengthening awareness and understanding among educators and the wider community.

Dyslexia can affect a child’s ability to read, write, spell and process information. However, it does not determine a child’s intelligence, creativity or potential to succeed. The challenge is therefore not simply to recognise dyslexia, but to ensure that this understanding translates into meaningful support at home, in schools and throughout the wider community.

    Understanding Must Come Before Assumptions

For children with dyslexia, a lack of understanding can have significant consequences. Those who require additional time to read, alternative explanations or different approaches to learning may be perceived as falling behind their peers. When attention is focused primarily on their difficulties, their individual strengths and abilities can easily be overlooked.

For parents, receiving a diagnosis can also mark the beginning of a challenging learning journey. Understanding assessments, exploring therapy and educational support, and working with teachers to identify suitable learning approaches can require considerable time, patience and commitment.

The objective should not be to eliminate every challenge a child faces, but to understand their individual needs and provide appropriate support without allowing those challenges to define their identity.

This perspective became particularly meaningful for one family after their son, Emir Zafeer Faris, was diagnosed with moderate dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia. Initially, the diagnosis raised many questions, but the family gradually shifted its attention towards understanding what motivated him, what he enjoyed and where he felt most confident.

Swimming and drumming became important parts of his journey, providing opportunities to develop interests and build confidence beyond academic assessments and learning interventions. Although every child’s experience is different, the family’s journey highlights an important lesson: a diagnosis should help adults identify where support is needed, rather than become the sole measure of a child’s abilities.

Creating a Support System Around Every Child

Schools play a vital role in supporting children with dyslexia, but effective support requires collaboration beyond the classroom. Parents and caregivers often need to coordinate assessments, therapy sessions and learning interventions while balancing employment and other family responsibilities.

Employers can also contribute by recognising the circumstances faced by working parents and caregivers. During the early stages of her son’s diagnosis, the flexibility and understanding shown by ROSEN’s regional and global management enabled the parent to attend appointments and assessments during working hours while continuing to fulfil professional responsibilities.

This experience demonstrates how trust and reasonable flexibility can help employees manage family commitments without compromising their professional responsibilities. Although workplaces cannot resolve the challenges associated with dyslexia, supportive policies and an understanding working environment can make a meaningful difference to families navigating the process.

The same principle applies to schools, families and communities. Support is most effective when it responds to an individual’s needs rather than assuming that one approach will work equally well for everyone.

Turning Dyslexia Awareness into Meaningful Action

Dyslexia Awareness Month provides an opportunity to move beyond simply recognising the condition and focus on the practical steps needed to improve understanding and inclusion.

For parents, greater awareness can help them recognise potential signs of learning difficulties and seek appropriate assessments and support. For educators, it can encourage a closer look at children’s individual learning needs, helping them identify strengths that might otherwise be overshadowed by academic challenges.

Families and communities also have an important role in creating environments where children are encouraged to develop their abilities, pursue their interests and build confidence. This may involve adapting teaching methods, allowing additional time to complete tasks or providing opportunities for children to excel in areas where they naturally thrive.

Supporting children with dyslexia does not mean lowering expectations. Instead, it means giving them fair and appropriate opportunities to learn, develop and demonstrate their capabilities.

Ultimately, meaningful inclusion requires more than acknowledging that people learn differently. It calls for a willingness to adapt, listen and provide support that enables every child to reach their potential.

As awareness continues to grow, the desired outcome should be greater understanding, more accessible support and inclusive environments for children with dyslexia and the families navigating their journey alongside them.

Most importantly, every child deserves to grow up understanding that the way they learn does not determine what they can achieve. Dyslexia may influence how a child learns, but it should never define the limits of their potential.

  • IJM LAND LAUNCHES ‘SHOCK AND SHIOK’ CAMPAIGN IN SEREMBAN 2, BRINGING EV MOBILITY AND SOLAR-READY LIVING

IJM Land Seremban 2 is bringing electric vehicle (EV) mobility, solar support and future-ready homeownership together through its Shock and Shiok Campaign @ Seremban 2, designed to offer homebuyers greater practical value beyond the purchase of a property.

Running from 1 July to 31 December 2026, the campaign is open to eligible purchasers of selected Seremban 2 developments, namely Sutera Phases 1 and 2, Batiq Phase 1, Nova Phases 1 and 2, and Vio Banj’ran. The initiative is built around the idea that homeownership extends beyond the initial purchase, with everyday costs, mobility, energy consumption and future lifestyle needs increasingly influencing homebuying decisions.

The campaign takes inspiration from the familiar Malaysian expression “Shock and Shiok”, turning the phrase into a homeownership proposition that combines an exciting reward with practical, long-term benefits. The “Shock” comes in the form of a chance for eligible purchasers to win one of three brand-new Proton e.MAS 5 Premium electric vehicles, with a combined value of RM209,400*, fully funded by IJM Land Seremban 2.

The “Shiok” element focuses on the longer-term benefits built into the participating homes. These properties come with built-in EV-ready charging isolator points, while eligible purchasers of Sutera, Batiq and Nova will also receive complimentary solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. Together, these features are designed to support homeowners as electric mobility and energy-efficient living become increasingly relevant to Malaysian households.

The initiative reflects a broader shift in homebuyer expectations, with families increasingly considering how a property can support long-term household planning rather than simply serving as a place to live. EV readiness, energy use and lifestyle infrastructure are becoming part of the conversation as homeowners look for properties that remain relevant as their needs evolve.

Through the Shock and Shiok Campaign, IJM Land Seremban 2 aims to connect these considerations more closely with everyday homeownership by combining property ownership with EV mobility and solar support. The campaign positions these features as practical additions that can contribute to future mobility, household energy planning and lifestyle needs beyond the point of handover.

The proposition is also supported by the wider Seremban 2 township ecosystem. As a self-contained township, Seremban 2 offers residential neighbourhoods alongside commercial amenities, education access, connectivity, community infrastructure, parks and landscaped green spaces. This established environment provides a broader setting for the campaign, linking future-ready home features with convenience, mobility, greenery and long-term liveability.

“The Shock and Shiok Campaign was shaped by a clear shift in how families think about homeownership today. Buyers are looking beyond the home as a physical space. They are asking how it can support daily movement, energy use and long-term household planning. Through this campaign, we are bringing EV mobility, solar support and township living into one practical proposition that continues delivering value well beyond the point of purchase,” said Datuk Chai Kian Soon, Chief Operating Officer of IJM Land.

He added that the campaign reflects IJM Land’s continued efforts to make its townships more responsive to evolving lifestyle requirements, with future-ready homeownership centred on practical benefits that can be experienced in everyday life.

“Future-ready homeownership must be practical in daily life. By bringing together EV mobility, solar support, township convenience and green spaces, we are creating a living environment that supports EV adoption, better household energy planning and greater confidence for families in the years ahead,” he said.

The Shock and Shiok Campaign @ Seremban 2 ultimately highlights IJM Land Seremban 2’s approach to enhancing the homeownership experience through features designed around changing household needs. By combining EV-ready provisions, solar PV support and the established amenities of Seremban 2, the campaign offers eligible homebuyers a pathway towards a more future-ready lifestyle within a mature township environment.

  • ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE ADVANCING THE FUTURE OF HEART RHYTHM CARE AT IJN

Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) continues to strengthen its commitment to clinical and academic excellence following the achievement of Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist Dr Suraya Hani Kamsani, who recently received her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) scroll from the University of Adelaide, Australia.

The achievement marks a significant milestone as Dr Suraya is recognised as the first Malaysian woman to obtain a PhD in electrophysiology, a highly specialised area of cardiology focused on the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders. Beyond the personal accomplishment, her achievement reflects IJN’s continued efforts to develop clinician-scientists who are able to combine specialist clinical expertise with research, scientific inquiry and the generation of new medical knowledge.

As cardiovascular medicine continues to evolve through increasingly complex technologies and treatment approaches, academic and research expertise has become an important component of modern clinical practice. Exposure to research allows clinicians to critically assess emerging evidence, evaluate new technologies and translate scientific discoveries into practical approaches that can ultimately benefit patients.

Dr Suraya’s clinical and research interests are particularly focused on atrial fibrillation and advanced ablation technologies. Her work has contributed to research involving pulsed field ablation (PFA), an emerging technology used in the treatment of abnormal heart rhythms, including first-in-human research in the field.

Acting Group Chief Executive Officer of IJN, Datuk Dr Shaiful Azmi Yahaya, said Dr Suraya’s achievement represents the type of integration between clinical practice and academic research that IJN aims to further strengthen.

According to him, clinical excellence can no longer depend solely on experience in the treatment room, but must also be supported by research, evidence and continuous learning. Clinicians who actively participate in research and advanced academic work are better equipped to assess new technologies, question existing practices and contribute meaningful advances to patient care.

Dr Suraya pursued her doctoral research while continuing her clinical responsibilities, building on her experience in diagnosing and managing complex heart rhythm disorders. Her clinical practice includes advanced electrophysiology procedures such as catheter ablation, as well as the implantation and management of cardiac rhythm devices.

Her research and publications have also explored areas including atrial fibrillation, pulsed field ablation, cardiac pacing and emerging technologies in electrophysiology. Through this combination of clinical practice and research, she has continued to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the management of heart rhythm disorders.

For Dr Suraya, the pursuit of a PhD represented more than an academic qualification. Her doctoral journey strengthened the relationship between research and clinical practice, encouraging a more critical approach to evidence and decision-making. She emphasised that the ultimate value of research lies in translating knowledge into better decisions, safer procedures and new treatment approaches for patients.

Her achievement also highlights the growing opportunities for Malaysian women to pursue highly specialised areas of cardiovascular medicine and contribute to medical research and innovation at an international level. • WHEN NIGHT VISION DIMINISHES: UNDERSTANDING RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA AND LIFE BEYOND DIAGNOSIS

Most people only think about their eyesight when changes occur, such as difficulty seeing in low light and a gradual loss of peripheral vision.

Most people only start paying attention to their eyesight when something begins to feel different, such as struggling to see in the dark or experiencing a gradual loss of peripheral vision. These changes can develop quietly and become increasingly difficult to ignore, particularly for people living with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a rare group of inherited retinal conditions that can cause progressive vision loss.

According to Dr Tara Mary George and Dr Daphne Teh, Consultant Ophthalmologists and Medical Retina and Uveitis Specialists at Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City (SMC), RP can present and progress differently from one individual to another. While there is currently no cure for the condition, early diagnosis and appropriate care can help patients manage their condition, maximise their remaining vision and maintain their quality of life.

RP is not a single disease but a group of inherited retinal disorders in which the retina does not function normally. The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye that converts light into signals sent to the brain, allowing us to see. In RP, genetic mutations disrupt this process, particularly affecting rod cells that are responsible for vision in low-light conditions and peripheral vision.

Because RP typically develops gradually, its early symptoms can easily be overlooked or mistaken for ordinary changes in eyesight. One of the most common early signs is difficulty adapting to dim environments. A person may take significantly longer to see after entering a dark room or cinema, while others may struggle to navigate safely when lighting is poor. As the condition progresses, peripheral vision may narrow, resulting in tunnel vision and making patients more likely to bump into objects around them.

Although RP has a genetic basis, its impact varies considerably between individuals. Some people may develop symptoms during childhood, while others may only notice changes in their vision later in adulthood. The timing and severity can depend on the specific genetic mutation involved. When more critical parts of the retina are affected, symptoms may appear earlier and be more severe, while milder forms may not become apparent until later in life.

The inheritance pattern can also vary because RP can result from different genetic causes. Some cases may occur within families, while others may arise without a known family history. This complexity is why RP is often described as an inherited retinal dystrophy. Given these variations, early detection and timely care are important in helping patients understand their condition, prepare for potential changes and take appropriate steps to manage its progression.

Diagnosing RP involves more than a routine eye examination. Assessment typically begins with a detailed medical history, followed by specialised tests such as visual field assessments and optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans. These tests can help identify changes in vision and retinal structure. In some cases, an electroretinogram (ERG) may also be performed to assess how the retina responds to light, although access to ERG testing remains limited in Malaysia.

A common sign is difficulty navigating in low-light settings, where the eyes may take longer to adjust or not adapt well. As the condition progresses, patients may develop tunnel vision and begin bumping into objects as side vision diminishes.

Individuals experiencing persistent difficulty seeing at night or noticing changes in their peripheral vision should therefore seek an assessment from an eye specialist rather than simply updating their glasses. Early evaluation can help identify the underlying cause and ensure that appropriate monitoring and support are provided.

While an RP diagnosis can understandably feel overwhelming, current care focuses on helping patients adapt to changes in vision and maintain independence. According to Dr Daphne, management involves proactive and supportive care, including regular monitoring to track disease progression and identify or manage complications that may develop. Follow-up care may include vision assessments, retinal imaging and treatment for related conditions such as cataracts or macular swelling.

Practical adjustments at home and in daily routines can also improve safety and confidence. These may include improving lighting around the home, reducing night-time driving and organising living spaces to create clearer and safer pathways. Early referral to low-vision rehabilitation services is another important aspect of care, as learning to adapt to vision changes earlier can help patients cope more effectively over the long term.

Technology is also playing an increasingly important role in helping people with RP remain independent. Digital magnifiers, text-to-speech software and smartphone applications can assist with reading, recognising objects and completing everyday tasks. Artificial intelligence (AI)-powered applications can also describe surroundings or read text aloud in real time, providing potentially valuable assistance when introduced early in the course of vision loss.

Beyond medical care and assistive technology, emotional and social support are equally important. An RP diagnosis does not necessarily mean losing independence or giving up on personal ambitions. With the right support and adaptations, many people living with the condition can continue their education, pursue careers and lead fulfilling lives.

Diagnosing RP goes beyond a routine eye check. It typically begins with a detailed medical history, followed by specialised tests to detect early changes in vision and retinal structure.

For newly diagnosed patients and their families, uncertainty can often be one of the most difficult aspects of the condition. Ongoing research, including developments in gene therapy, is creating new possibilities for the future. However, raising awareness of early symptoms and ensuring patients receive appropriate assessment, care and support remain essential.

Understanding the condition, preparing for changes and seeking the right support can make a meaningful difference in living with RP. By taking things one step at a time, accessing appropriate eye care and exploring rehabilitation and assistive technologies, patients can continue working towards greater confidence, independence and quality of life.
